Dreams and Nightmares - The Children of the Lost
Dreams. They can inspire, they can terrify, they can change our lives. Throughout history, people have struggled, and fought, and died for their vision of utopia – the “perfect place”. Let author David Whitley take you on a tour through some historical utopias, from the deadly serious to the wacky and weird. Explore with him the world of his own books - The Midnight Charter and its sequel The Children of the Lost, set in lands built on dreams of perfection. Bring your ideas, as David invites you to imagine your own utopia, but beware. Because for every dream, there is a nightmare.

An event suitable for all ages, especially young adults from age 11+

Fran Sandham was an editor at Rough Guides for several years and worked in bookselling and in the voluntary sector before that. He has travelled in over fifty countries. He now divides his time between freelance writing and public speaking. He has written for many newspapers, magazines and travel publications including the Sunday Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Observer, Traveller magazine, Adventure Travel, Travel Africa and Country Walking.

Fran took on the challenge of a lifetime, by walking across Africa solo (or at least solo apart from a disastrous donkey), from Namibia's Skeleton Coast to the Indian Ocean near Zanzibar: no backup, no support team, no one to carry his gear, no sponsors, no film crew, no journalists, no fuss, no cheering crowds, and no strings attached. Above all, it had to be on a one-way ticket: no safety nets, no get-out clauses and nothing to fall back on ...

It is a pleasure to welcome Fran to the festival. He will be visiting Bridgnorth Library to talk about this amazing solo trek and to sign copies of his book: Traversa - A Solo Walk Across Africa.

The author’s first novel was the number 1 best-seller The Bad Mother’s Handbook, which tells the story of a year in the life of one extraordinary family. The book was so popular it was made into a Radio 4 ten-part series.
